Millions of customers will be opening new Amazon devices this holiday season, so there has never been a better time to publish your app or game to the Amazon Appstore. According to statistics just released, Amazon device sales over Black Friday and the following weekend tripled those of the year before. The number one best-selling product across all of Amazon.com was the Fire tablet, followed by the Fire TV Stick.
Much of this sales growth may be attributed to Amazon’s new 7” Fire tablet, launched just this year. At only $49.99, it has become the fastest-selling Amazon tablet ever, with millions sold since launch. This may be the first tablet you can buy in a “six-pack,” and costing only $250, that option has been popular. According to Dave Limp, SVP, Amazon Devices, “We’ve reached a tipping point with Fire—it is our fastest-selling tablet ever. We’ve already built millions—and we’re ramping up production to build millions more.”
For Fire OS and Android developers, this is exciting news. With each Fire tablet sold, the potential audience for your app or game grows larger, even if you’ve never developed for an Amazon device before. Most Android apps we’ve tested work on Fire with no code changes, so bringing your existing product to these new customers can be as simple as submitting it to the Amazon Appstore. Getting started is easy.
Amazon Fire TV has become the number one streaming media player in the US across all retailers, with holiday sales so far growing more than 500% over the same period last year. Using the same Android-based Fire OS running on Amazon tablets, Fire TV is easy to develop for and opens a whole new audience for most mobile developers. Now your app or game is accessible on the biggest screen in the house.
The Fire TV Stick was the second-most popular device sold on Amazon.com on Black Friday, so it’s clearly popular with customers. PC Magazine agrees, saying, “Amazon has updated its Fire TV Stick just in time for the holidays, adding a few welcome features to the already excellent media streamer... It easily earns our Editors' Choice for budget media streamers.”
Targeting Fire TV and Fire TV Stick is a great way to expand the audience for your app or game, reaching new customers who will use it right from the couch in their living room. The hardware is powerful, too, so your apps look and sound great. With quad-core processor, dedicated GPU, and 8GB memory on-device, Fire TV has 5x the processing power of the latest Roku and 8x the processing power of Chromecast. Fire TV Stick has a dual-core processor and 1GB of memory.
App purchases typically increase dramatically at this time of year, and with the strong sales of Amazon devices so far, we expect that trend to continue. Now is the best time to reach these millions of new potential customers. The Amazon Appstore is the only appstore available on Fire tablets, Fire TV, and Fire TV Stick, but it’s not just for Amazon devices. It comes preloaded on millions of Android and Blackberry 10 devices, and can be installed on millions more.
